The Arenberg Musician’s Semester

Weekly rehearsals

We rehearse every Thursday evening from 7:45 PM to 10:30 PM at Het STUK (Naamsestraat 96, Leuven). A rehearsal begins with the members setting up the hall. If everyone helps out, this is quickly accomplished.

The rehearsal consists of two parts, led by our conductor, Roel Willems, with a break in between. With only about ten rehearsals per semester, each one is important. Therefore, you are expected to practice your parts at home as well.

For those who haven’t had enough of the orchestra after a rehearsal, we always enjoy a drink afterward. This is an excellent opportunity to forge deeper friendships and get to know members of other instrumental groups.

Rehearsal weekend

Every semester, we have a weekend get-together with all the musicians to first rehearse thoroughly. Thanks to this weekend, we are ready to perform what we have prepared at the end of the semester.

Rehearsal weekends are also the perfect time to relax. With a cantus for those who prefer something a bit wilder, or a movie night for those who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, we offer a program every evening to suit your preferences.

Coaching

Each semester, we have at least one partial rehearsal led by a professional coach. This coach provides new musical insights into the pieces we play and tips and tricks for technique.

Concert

The highlight for many of our members is the end-of-semester concert. With a unique approach each semester, each concert remains a new experience for our members. The concerts are held in early December and early May for the first and second semesters, respectively. This allows plenty of time for rehearsals before the concerts and for studying afterward, as we’re all still students!

Non-musical activities

A semester with the Arenberg Orchestra wouldn’t be complete without the efforts of our non-musical activities working group. This working group consists of four orchestra members who are committed to increasing the orchestra’s enthusiasm. All non-musical activities are completely voluntary. Those who attend can expect movie nights, ice skating trips, city games, inter-ensemble cantuses, and much more.

Absensces

Can’t make it to rehearsal this week? No problem! You’re expected to practice your parts independently that week, write down notes and bow strokes, listen to recordings, and so on. In short, you’ll make sure you’re fully up-to-date at the rehearsal. This way, everyone stays on the same page, making it more fun for everyone!

Concert trip

For those who want a little something extra, there’s the opportunity to join us on a concert tour in September. We’ve previously traveled to Normandy, Costa Rica, Salzburg, Gothenburg, and China. With a mix of adventurous and less adventurous activities, relaxation, and concerts, we immerse ourselves in the local culture. Exploratory tours, cozy evenings, and the unique atmosphere of Arenberg… It’s all part of the experience! We also regularly collaborate with local universities and students.

Something for you?

Does the Arenberg Orchestra sound like something for you? Then be sure to come to the introductory rehearsals at the beginning of the academic year. More information will be available on the website and our Facebook page a few weeks beforehand.

We don’t hold auditions. However, we do count on your commitment and motivation if you want to join our orchestra. A good balance within the orchestra is, of course, important. Therefore, a lottery will be held if there are too many applicants for a particular instrument group.

If you’d like to join in the second semester, please send us a message via the contact form. Places become available regularly.
